2023 Spicy Bubbles Pet Nat
Sparkling Wine For Drinking, Not Thinking
The "Spicy Bubbles" name is a reference to my nieces who, when they were growing up, would find the sensation of carbonated beverages very strange and confuse it with being spicy. Whenever we were out and they were after a soft drink, they would always ask for spicy bubbles which has stuck in our household for anything with fizz.
This is a Pet Nat, a style of sparkling wine made by capturing the carbonation of the first ferment of the grapes. If you are looking for a session-able drink, built for sunshine and good times, this is your guy. Riesling + Semillon.
Just a heads up, this wine is cloudy and may have a small amount of sediment in the bottle. This is intentional, sort of like proper OJ or kombucha, and it wont hurt you to consume it.
REGION: Geelong, Victoria
VINEYARD: Pettavel Vineyard, grown on grey and brown loams with granite, on Wadawurrung Country
VINTAGE: 2023
VARIETAL: Riesling + Semillon
GROWING SEASON: Similar to 2022, the theme of the 2023 season was cool and wet. The cool start meant that the entire growing season was delayed, pushing pick dates later than previous years. However, these cooler conditions resulted in great flavour development at lower sugar levels.
ALCOHOL: 12% - 7.1 standard drinks
WINEMAKING: Destemmed fruit, a couple hours of skin contact before it was sent direct to the press. Cool, slow, native ferment in stainless steel tanks before bottling before the ferment had completed.
FOOD MATCH: Antipasto or just a good quality packet of chips in the park with some sunshine.
