2019 Heathcote Shiraz No. 1

The Wine

From three vineyards, we make our Heathcote Shiraz every year. Each vineyard is in distinctly different micro-climates within the Heathcote GI; each hand-picked parcel of fruit adds a unique dimension to this wine. Medium body, lovely length with a tiny bit of liquorice that's a nice little sweetener. Dark plum jam, without the sugar and at the same time maybe a bright little single blueberry that bursts in your mouth. White cardamon, maybe allspice, balanced and elegance of something old world, not new.

The Vineyards

A blend of fruit from three different sub-regions: Colbinabbin (Mount Burrumboot Estate), Toolleen (Dead Horse Hill) and Kimbolton (Coliban Glen Vineyard).

Mount Burrumboot Estate, Colbinabbin

Located at the northern tip of the Heathcote Wine Region in Colbinabbin, Mount Burrumboot Estate is owned and operated by Cathy and Andrew Branson. The vines were planted in 1999 and include both Marsanne and Shiraz and other red varieties. Being farmers for generations, the Bransons heed to the philosophy of minimal intervention and sustainable practice: they care for their soils, follow organic practices, and encourage the diversity of soil microflora so that each vine receives natural nutrients. Irrigated by the Waranga-Western Channel, the vineyard runs north to south over deep, fertile, ancient Cambrian soil. A combination of hand-picking and machine harvesting is undertaken every year.

Dead Horse Hill, Toolleen

A unique 4-acre Shiraz vineyard located 20km north of the Heathcote township in Toolleen. Planted in 1994 by Jencie McRobert, the dry-grown site is located on mineral-rich Cambrian soil. At an altitude of 203m and on an easterly facing slope, the berries are always intense and full of punchy tannins. Following the principles of sustainable viticulture, Jencie hand-prunes the vineyard every year and uses organic, sustainable fertilisers to enhance soil quality. The fruit is hand-picked by Jencie, Russell and their family and friends to ensure the bunches remain whole.

Coliban Glen Vineyard, Kimbolton

Located on the western banks of Lake Eppalock is this beautiful vineyard. It's easterly facing, catches the morning rays, and is irrigated by the Lake. Planted in 1996 on loamy soils and owned and operated by Peter Raeburn, this distinctive site produces Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with crisp acidity every year. Being in the southern pocket of the Heathcote GI, the vineyard is slower ripening, allowing the berries to develop floral and fruit notes. The vineyard is hand-pruned and hand-picked, and the passion Peter has for his vines shows through every year in the exceptional fruit he produces.

Winemaking Notes

A combination of hand-picking and machine harvesting took place between 2 March and 16 March 2019. Each vineyard is low cropped, giving the berries robust concentration and incredible, vibrant colour. The fruit was transported straight to the winery for processing. Fermented in small, open fermenters over two weeks with twice daily punch downs and temperature control. Post ferment, the wine was racked into French and American barriques, some old and some new to balance oak tannins. The wine went through secondary fermentation in late June 2019, with only minimal sulphur additions. Finally, in early 2021, each barrique was individually tasted and graded before being blended.

From each vineyard, the blend is 60% from Mount Burrumboot Estate, 25% from Coliban Glen Vineyard and 15% from Dead Horse Hill.

Palate Dark plum jam, blueberry with cardamon and allspice. Medium-bodied, with a long lengthy finish.

Varieties 100% Shiraz.

Soil Ancient Cambrian loam.

Artwork A collaboration with Gorkie, a Melbourne based artist and cartoonist, with who we have worked since early 2020.
