I love the fruit that comes off the Rice vineyard. Previously I’ve only made reds from this site, but the natural acids have been good so I hoped a Rose would work too. To really chase the natural acid I picked quite early so it’s a very light, fresh style.

Garry Rice, the owner and grower, keeps it very simple. Year in year out he manages the vineyard with little or no chemicals – he’s not certified organic but he sometimes goes further than required in organic viticulture and uses no sprays at all. Basically, based on experience and knowledge of the area, he chose wisely when he selected a site. The result is that the disease pressure is minimal, almost non-existent in good years. He also has access to recycled water for irrigation, which is important in an area that can be hot and dry over the summer months.

At the start of the vintage, I was curious to see how an early picked Rose from this vineyard would come out. At release I’m really pleased by the depth and length of flavour that accompanies the lightness and freshness.

Vineyard - Shiraz fruit was sourced from the Rice vineyard near Stawell in the Grampians region. Garry Rice uses organic practices - in some years he takes it even further and uses no sprays at all (copper and sulphur sprays are allowed as part of organically certified viticulture). This is essentially down to good planning - he planted his vineyard on a site that doesn’t have the disease pressure that demands multiple sprays year after year.

Winemaking - Whole bunches were crushed and destemmed then left to soak for 3 hours before pressing to old neutral French oak for fermentation and maturation for 6 months. A couple of barrels were left on lees for most of that time. Unfiltered, unfined and wild yeast fermented. No additions other than minimal sulphur.

Vegan friendly.
